Carl Heard Fales, 92, died Oct. 18, 2009, at Powell Hospital.
Carl Heard Fales was born in Pomona, Missouri, on June 25, 1917, and arrived in Garland, Wyoming in March 1918 on an emigration train at age 9 months. He was the oldest child of Carl and Mary Heard Fales. His brother Paul was born in Garland in 1918.
In 1919, his parents homesteaded in Deaver, where he attended elementary school and where his brother Frank was born in 1921. The family moved back to Garland in 1929, where his sister Mary was born in 1934. After graduating from Powell High School in 1935, Heard farmed with his brother Paul on the Willwood and then Emblem Bench. Heard and Alice Johannesen were married in Lovell on Nov. 20, 1943. They lived on Emblem Bench where they were joined by daughter Linda and sons Steven and David. In 1959, Heard and his family moved to a farm on Heart Mountain near Ralston.
He enjoyed his adult life as a farmer and raised beans, sugar beets, alfalfa, grain and corn, as well as cattle. He called farming his vocation, recreation and hobby.
Alice died in 1972. He then married Ruth Partridge Asay, who died in 1987. Heard and Vivian Brimhall Underwood married in 1988 and lived on the Heart Mountain farm until they moved to Powell in 2000.
Heard enjoyed his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and especially enjoyed serving in the temple. He traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada, but was most happy at home in Powell. Heard was able to live at home until the day he died because of the dedicated support of his wife Vivian.
He was optimistic and was in good humor with an alert mind until the moment of his passing.
He was so proud of his family and loved each of them so much.
Heard is survived by his wife, sister Joan Talbott, sister-in-law Lola (Frank) Fales, brother-in-law Carl Johannesen, children Linda (Steven) Parkin of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., Steven (Mardi) of Las Vegas, and David (Kristine) of Cody, former daughter-in-law Terry Andersen of Cedar City, Utah, stepchildren David (Francine) Underwood, Jesse, Bill (Cheryl), Janice (James), Helen (Bobby), and John (Laura), 17 grandchildren, 19 step-grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, 10 nieces and two nephews.
The funeral was so nice and even though the circumstances were sad, it was nice to get together and see the Fales Family.
We ate donuts without our hands . . . at least at first. We also played Halloween bingo, a skeleton game and musical chairs.
I made a "witches brew" for them all to drink. Some were a little scared to try it though.
After the party, it was time for dinner and then trick or treating! Ben and Austin stayed home to pass out candy to all those trick or treaters.
Charity came down with her kids for the activities. We took the kiddos out to gather up as much candy as possible. Our new neighborhood was a little disappointing though. Well, I guess my kids still came home with a lot of candy . . . but it seemed like so many people weren't home or weren't answering their doors . . . and then not many kids came to our house either. Now I know that I don't need to get much candy next year.
